Als ich diesen Blog begonnen habe, stand darunter: A blog about my journey with and to myself.

My name is Janine, but my family and friends simply call me Nine. When I came to Seoul in 2023, the plan was actually quite simple: two years in Korea. I wanted to work at the German School in Seoul, discover a new country and, for a while, live a life that belonged only to me. Alone! Just me! Just Nine!

Those two years have somehow turned into almost four, and somewhere along the way, an adventure became a pretty important part of my life. This blog has changed with me. In the beginning, it was mainly about Korea: Seoul, my new job, travelling, food, culture and all the big and small things I discovered here. Today, it is just as much about what this life has done to me. About freedom and belonging, relationships and separation, friendship, trust and new beginnings. About Korean culture and all those moments when living here suddenly makes me look at my own life differently. And, of course, it is still about this sometimes completely crazy, exhausting and wonderful country where the two years I had planned have somehow become almost four.

When I started this blog, I gave it the subtitle: A blog about my journey with and to myself. Back then, I simply thought it sounded right. Today, I know just how literal that sentence would become. My fourth and final year in Korea has now begun, and I still don’t know what exactly I will take with me from these years when they come to an end. But maybe I don’t need to know that yet. After all, the journey isn’t over.
